The waterfall island, done properly.
It is the piece everyone looks at when they walk into your kitchen, and it is the piece most likely to be quietly compromised to hit a price. A waterfall lives or dies on three details: the mitre, the vein, and what is holding the overhang up. Here is the whole job, explained the way we would explain it standing in your kitchen.
Mitred, or just sitting on top?
A waterfall is where the benchtop turns the corner at the end of the island and runs down to the floor. How those two pieces meet is the whole game.
A mitred join cuts both pieces at 45 degrees so they meet in a clean knife-edge corner. Done well, the eye reads one continuous piece of stone folding over the end, and you cannot find the seam without looking for it. A butt join just drops the top onto the side piece and leaves a horizontal line across the corner. It is faster, wastes less slab, costs less, and looks like exactly what it is.
Almost every waterfall you have admired in a magazine is mitred. Some of the cheaper quotes floating around the Peel are butt joins with the word waterfall on them. They are not the same product and the price difference tells you so. If you are comparing quotes, ask the question directly: is this a mitred waterfall or a butt join?
The other choice is thickness. A standard 20mm slab can be mitred and folded to give a 20mm edge, or built up with a mitred return to read as a chunky 40mm or 60mm blade. The thicker look is currently everywhere and it costs more, because you are consuming extra slab to fabricate an edge that is mostly air behind it.
Making the stone turn the corner.
On a plain or lightly speckled colour there is nothing to match, and a mitred waterfall just works. On a dramatic marble-look stone, which is what most Mandurah kitchens are choosing in 2026, vein matching is the difference between a showpiece and something that looks wrong without people knowing why.
To make a vein run over the edge and continue down the leg, the two pieces have to be cut from adjacent positions on the slab and rotated so the pattern lines up across the mitre. It is a slab-yield problem more than a labour problem. Nesting the pieces to preserve the vein means you cannot nest them to save material, and on a big island that can push a kitchen from one slab to two. That is a genuine cost step, not a small surcharge, and it is why an honest quote asks what colour you have chosen before it prices the waterfall.
Book-matching is the next level up: two adjacent slabs opened like a book so the veins mirror each other across the island. Spectacular when it lands, and it needs the right slab pair sitting in the warehouse at the right time, which is its own reason not to leave your kitchen until November. Material matters here too. Engineered stone still leads on veining choice and consistency. Porcelain waterfalls look superb and are UV-stable, which counts in the light-flooded open-plan kitchens at Halls Head and Dawesville, but on most porcelain the pattern is printed on the surface rather than running through the body, so the mitre needs real care to avoid a pale line at the arris. What holds it all up.
This is the part nobody photographs and the part that decides whether your island is still perfect in ten years.
- Overhang. Roughly 300mm of unsupported overhang is the working limit in 20mm engineered stone, less on a long span or a heavily veined slab. Want a 450mm breakfast bar for stools? That needs steel flat bar or brackets carried back into the cabinetry. Cheap at build time, impossible to retrofit once the stone is glued down.
- The cabinets. Fixed, braced and dead level. A waterfall leg is a 900mm vertical ruler held against your cabinetmaker’s work, and it will show a 2mm error to anyone standing in the room.
- The floor. The leg runs to the floor, so the floor has to be finished and level where it lands. A waterfall to a finished floor is the classic look; a waterfall stopping at a toe kick is a legitimate alternative and much more forgiving of an uneven floor.
- Services. Power, data or water for the island goes through the cabinet before we template. Chasing it afterwards means cutting stone in your kitchen, which nobody wants.
- Access. An island slab is heavy and awkward. A canal-front apartment at Mandurah Ocean Marina or a first-floor Falcon unit needs the carry planned at the measure, not discovered on install day.
Sitting under all of this is the ordinary discipline of a kitchen install to AS/NZS 4386, and the fact that the stone itself has to be a compliant material in the first place, which since July 2024 is not a given. That story is on the engineered stone silica rules page.
The floor under the leg is worth one more thought, because a waterfall is the least forgiving thing in your kitchen about ground movement. Most of the City of Mandurah sits on well-drained dune sand that classifies at the stable end of AS 2870, the residential slabs and footings standard, which is why a waterfall leg here usually stays put. Out in the Shire of Murray around Pinjarra, Ravenswood or South Yunderup, and on the estuary fringe, reactive and low-lying ground is more of a factor, and a floor that lifts a couple of millimetres is visible where the stone lands. Neither council issues a permit for a benchtop, so this is not a paperwork problem; it is just a reason to template off a finished, level floor rather than an optimistic one.
What a waterfall island actually costs.
A mitred waterfall end is $600 to $1,200 per side on top of the benchtop, and most islands take two. In mid-range engineered stone a double waterfall typically adds $1,400 to $2,000 to the kitchen. Porcelain is dearer again: harder to cut, slower, and less forgiving at the mitre.
A worked example from a Greenfields renovation. The kitchen had 4.8m² of benchtop in mid-range engineered stone at $780/m², so $3,744 for the slab. Add an undermount sink cut-out ($280), a cooktop cut-out ($180), two mitred waterfall ends at $850 each ($1,700), and removal of the old laminate ($250). That lands at $6,154 all-up, of which the waterfall is a little under a third. Do the same island in porcelain with a book-matched vein and you are comfortably past $9,000, mostly because of the second slab.
Is it worth it? Honestly, it depends on the room. In an open-plan kitchen where the island is the first thing you see from the living area, it is the best value upgrade on the whole bench and we say so. In a galley kitchen with an island jammed against a wall, nobody will ever see the end and the money is better spent on the material or a matching stone splashback. That eats slab area and can push a kitchen from one slab into two, which is a real cost step rather than a small surcharge. On a plain or lightly speckled colour there is nothing to match and it costs nothing extra. On a dramatic marble-look stone, a mismatched waterfall vein is the first thing every visitor notices.
How much overhang can an island benchtop have without support?
As a working rule, about 300mm of unsupported overhang in 20mm engineered stone, and less if the stone is heavily veined or the span is long. Beyond that it needs steel flat bar, brackets or a ply subframe carried back into the cabinetry. This is where breakfast-bar overhangs go wrong: someone wants a 450mm knee space for stools, nobody allows for the steel, and the stone eventually cracks along the thin section while someone is leaning on it. The support is cheap at build time and impossible to add later.
What has to be right before you template a waterfall island?
Three things. The cabinets must be installed, fixed and genuinely level, because a waterfall leg exaggerates any error and a 2mm lean is visible on a 900mm drop. The floor has to be finished and level where the leg lands, since the stone runs to the floor and any gap shows. And any power or water going into the island has to be routed through the cabinet before we template, not chased through afterwards.
