Your benchtop just cracked. Here is the first hour.
Stop using the bench. Clear everything off the cracked run, especially anything heavy, and open the cupboard underneath. If the crack runs through the sink or dishwasher cut-out, shut the tap valves under the sink and switch the dishwasher off at the wall. If a piece is loose or moving, do not lift it: get a length of timber under the unsupported edge and prop it off the cabinet base. Keep kids and pets out of the kitchen. Then photograph the whole bench and the crack before you touch anything else, because those photos decide any insurance claim later.

What makes it worse in the next few hours
Keep doing these and a $500 repair becomes a $2,500 one
- Loading the cracked side. A crack is a hinge. Every kettle, every leaning elbow works it a little further open until the two sides step, and once they step, a filled repair is off the table.
- Running the dishwasher. The steam plume out of the door at the end of a cycle hits the underside of the slab and the cabinet edge at close to 60 degrees. That is a thermal cycle straight into the weakest point in the kitchen.
- Letting water sit in the crack. Water finds the chipboard or ply substrate underneath, and swollen substrate lifts the stone and widens the crack. A day of a dripping tap does more damage than a year of normal cooking.
- Taping it and hoping. Tape traps water against the stone and pulls the polish off engineered stone when it comes off. Clear it, prop it, leave it dry.
- Filling it with hardware store epoxy. A DIY fill locks the crack in its current wrong position and has to be ground out before a proper repair, which adds $150 to $300 to the job.
Safe for you, and genuinely dangerous
Safe to do yourself: clear and clean the bench, shut the tap isolators and switch appliances off at the wall, prop an unsupported section from below, cover a sharp edge with a folded towel taped to the cabinet face rather than to the stone, put a fan on an open cupboard to dry it out, and take photos from every angle.
Genuinely dangerous: lifting a slab. A 3 metre sink run in 20mm engineered stone weighs around 90kg, it is unsupported through the cut-out, and it will fold and snap if two people carry it flat. Stone travels on edge, with two people, or it does not travel.
Illegal as well as dangerous: cutting or grinding your existing engineered stone. Engineered stone has been prohibited nationally since 1 July 2024, and work on a legacy top, meaning removal, repair, minor modification or disposal, has to be notified to the WorkSafe WA regulator and carried out with water suppression, on-tool extraction and proper respiratory protection. After hours, or Monday? The honest numbers
A stone fabricator is not a burst-pipe plumber. There is no truck parked in Mandurah at nine at night with a matching slab on it, because your slab has to be templated, cut and polished in a workshop over five to ten business days regardless of when you make contact. What an after-hours attendance actually buys you is a make-safe, and nothing more.

When it is honestly not an emergency
If the crack is stable, the two sides are flush, nothing is wet and nothing is sharp, waiting three days costs you nothing and saves $200 to $300. We would rather tell you that and see you next week than charge a weekend rate to look at a hairline you have already photographed perfectly well. The same goes for a chip: it is cosmetic, it is not going to grow overnight, and it gets repaired properly and cheaply as part of a normal booking.
The one people ignore that really is urgent
Water into the cabinet is the emergency nobody reports. A soft kickboard and a dark patch at the back of the sink base look like nothing, and six months later the sink cabinet has to come out, the top has to be lifted to do it, and a $250 re-bead has turned into $1,800 of cabinetry work and stone handling. If the chipboard under your sink is dark and spongy, treat that with more urgency than the crack you can see.
Why Mandurah benchtops crack where they do
Three local patterns account for most of what we get called to across Mandurah, Halls Head, Greenfields, Dawesville and Pinjarra.
- Ground movement in the older stock. The 1970s and 1980s brick and tile homes through Greenfields, Coodanup and Dudley Park sit on sand over clay, and the reactive river flats near the Serpentine and Murray around Pinjarra move seasonally between a wet winter and a dry February. The house moves, the cabinets move a few millimetres, and a rigid stone top has nowhere to put that load except the sink cut-out.
- Undersized support in fast estate builds. Plenty of 2000s and 2010s kitchens through Meadow Springs, Lakelands and Madora Bay were fitted with no bracing bar across a sink cut-out and no support rail under an unsupported overhang. It holds for a decade, and then it does not.
- Heat and steam. Dishwashers venting straight up into the slab underside, and pots going straight off a gas burner onto engineered stone. Porcelain shrugs both off. The replacement problem nobody warns you about
If your cracked top is pre-2024 high-silica engineered stone, that exact product is no longer legal to supply or install anywhere in Australia. A single damaged run usually cannot be matched to the rest of your kitchen, because the compliant low-silica and silica-free replacements are new formulations with new colour ranges. Practically that means a decision: repair the crack and keep the kitchen you have, or replace the lot in one compliant material. We will tell you plainly which one your kitchen justifies, and if the answer is a $600 repair, we are not going to talk you into $6,000 of stone you do not need.
