Looking after your stone benchtop.
You have just spent five thousand dollars on a bench that should outlast the kitchen around it. Almost everything that goes wrong with one is preventable, and most of it is caused by good intentions with the wrong bottle. Here is the honest aftercare guide, including the two things a coastal Peel kitchen needs that an inland one does not.
The method, and it really is this boring.
Warm water. A few drops of pH-neutral dishwashing liquid. A microfibre cloth. Dry it off. That is the entire routine for engineered stone, porcelain and sealed natural stone, and if you do it most days you will never need us for anything other than a new kitchen in twenty years.
The failure mode is predictable. A mark will not shift, so you reach for something stronger, and the something stronger is precisely what causes permanent damage. If warm soapy water will not lift it, the answer is a longer soak with a damp cloth laid over the mark, not a harsher chemical. Patience is free. A dull patch in the middle of your island is not.
Drying matters more in the Peel than people expect. The mains water here leaves mineral deposit, and a bench left to air-dry around the tap builds a cloudy film that then gets attacked with something aggressive, which is how a cosmetic issue becomes a permanent one. Wipe it dry and the problem never starts.
What actually destroys a benchtop.
None of these are exotic. They are all sitting under someone’s sink right now.
- Bleach and ammonia. Attack the resin binder in engineered stone. The dulling is permanent and not a warranty item.
- Oven and drain cleaner. Violently alkaline. A splash left for ten minutes will leave a mark you own forever.
- Descaler and anything acidic. On marble or limestone this etches on contact. Lemon juice does it. So does most supermarket bathroom spray.
- Abrasive cream cleanser and steel wool. Scratches the polish off. Porcelain resists it, engineered stone does not.
- A hot pan with no trivet. Resin scorches. Porcelain copes far better, granite copes well, but every cut-out on the bench hates thermal cycling.
- Cutting straight on the stone. It will not scratch a good bench, but it will absolutely destroy your knives. Use a board.
One that surprises people: methylated spirits and some solvent-based cleaners are fine on porcelain and risky on certain engineered stone resins. If you are about to use anything that is not pH-neutral, test it in the far back corner behind the kettle first. Ten seconds of caution.
Who needs it, who is being sold it.
Engineered stone and porcelain are effectively non-porous. They never need sealing. If someone knocks on your door in Meadow Springs offering an annual seal on your engineered stone island, they are selling you a bottle of nothing. Say no.
Natural stone is a different animal and this is the trade-off you accepted when you chose it. Granite generally wants resealing every one to two years. Marble and limestone are hungrier and depend entirely on how hard the kitchen is used. There is a free test that removes all the guesswork: put a few drops of water on the stone right next to the tap, where wear is worst, and wait five minutes. Beads up, you are sealed. Soaks in and darkens the stone, it is time. Wipe it up and book it.
The same logic applies to vanity tops and laundry benchtops in natural stone, which people forget about entirely because they are not the kitchen. A vanity around a tap gets more water than most kitchen benches do.
One thing everyone should do once a year regardless of material: look at the silicone bead where the bench meets the splashback and the wall. If it has gone black or lifted, recut it. That bead is doing real work keeping water out of the substrate, and it is the cheapest thing on your bench to replace. Salt, sun and the western light.
If you live at Halls Head, Wannanup, Silver Sands or the water side of Dawesville, there are two extra jobs and they take about a minute each.
Salt. An alfresco or outdoor bar bench near the water picks up a salt film off the sea breeze. On the stone itself that is cosmetic. On the fixings, the brackets and any stainless underneath it is corrosion, and corrosion under a bench is invisible until something lets go. Hose it or wipe it with fresh water regularly. Sun. Western Australia gets genuinely extreme UV, and a Mandurah open-plan kitchen designed around an estuary view is pointing straight into it every afternoon. Porcelain is UV-stable and simply does not care. Some darker engineered stones will chalk or lose colour over many years in that light, and the difference shows up as a lighter band where the sun lands. If you already have dark engineered stone in a west-facing kitchen, close the blind in the afternoon. When something does go wrong. A small edge chip is usually repairable for $250 to $600 by someone who does it properly with colour-matched resin. A supermarket repair kit on a visible island edge tends to look worse than the chip did. A stain on natural stone often lifts with a poultice left overnight rather than any amount of scrubbing. A worked example on what care is worth. Take a typical Greenfields kitchen of 4.5m² in mid-range engineered stone at $750/m², so $3,375 of stone, plus an undermount sink cut-out ($280), a cooktop cut-out ($180) and removal of the old top ($250). That is $4,085 to replace. Against that, a year of looking after it costs a $6 bottle of pH-neutral cleaner, a $15 trivet and about a minute a day with a microfibre cloth. Two colour-matched chip repairs over a decade at $250 to $600 each still come to a fraction of the replacement. None of this needs anyone’s permission, incidentally. Recutting silicone, resealing granite or repairing a chip is maintenance, not building work, so there is no permit involved from the City of Mandurah, or from the Shire of Murray if you are out at Pinjarra, Ravenswood or Furnissdale, which sit in that shire rather than the City.

On engineered stone the aggressive stuff attacks the resin binder and leaves a permanently dull patch you cannot polish out at home. On marble and limestone, anything acidic including lemon juice, vinegar and many bathroom sprays will etch the surface within seconds. Keep a pH-neutral cleaner under the sink and treat everything else as off limits.
Does an engineered stone or porcelain benchtop need sealing?
No. Engineered stone and porcelain are both effectively non-porous and never need sealing, and any operator offering you an annual sealing service for them is selling you nothing. Natural stone is different. Granite generally wants resealing every one to two years and marble more often, depending on use. Can I put a hot pan on my stone benchtop?
Use a trivet, always. Porcelain handles brief heat well because it is fired at extreme temperature, and it is the more forgiving of the two. Engineered stone contains resin that can scorch, discolour or craze under a pot straight off a burner, and that damage is permanent and not covered by any warranty we have read. Natural granite tolerates heat well but repeated thermal cycling still stresses a benchtop at its cut-outs. A trivet costs fifteen dollars and removes the whole question.
What extra care does a coastal Mandurah benchtop need?
Two things the inland suburbs do not worry about. Salt, if you have an alfresco or outdoor bench anywhere near the water at Halls Head, Dawesville or Wannanup: rinse it with fresh water regularly, because salt film is harmless on the stone itself but corrosive to the fixings and any stainless underneath. And light, because the western sun through an open-plan coastal kitchen is genuinely harsh. Porcelain is UV-stable and unbothered, but a dark engineered stone in full afternoon sun benefits from a blind you actually close.
